Abstract Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) have been developed as teaching aids in many areas including mathematics, computer programming, medical science, and web-based adult education. An ITS teaches students in an interactive, adaptive way. ITSs can offer students with the benefits of one-to-one tutoring without the costs of dedicating one human teacher to each student. In building an ITS, the major tasks include representing and storing domain knowledge, dynamically modeling student states, and optimizing tutoring actions based on the information of current student states. In this talk, we will, from a perspective of computer science, discuss the structure of an ITS and underlying techniques, practical systems, challenges, and the state-of-the-art techniques for developing ITSs and for addressing the challenges.
